Every October, as the leaves begin to turn and a crisp breeze fills the air, the Rocky Mount Event Center undergoes a magical transformation. Gone are the usual courts and conference rooms — in their place emerges a Halloween wonderland of costumes, candy, and community joy. It’s called Spooktacular Oktoberfest, and it’s one of the most beloved free family events in Eastern North Carolina.
With over 2,000 guests flooding through the doors from Rocky Mount, Wilson, Tarboro, Nashville, Greenville, and beyond, this annual celebration has grown into a cherished fall tradition — and it just keeps getting better.

As kids burst through the entrance in their princess gowns, superhero suits, and monster masks, they’re greeted with a treat that kicks off the afternoon right — a free Halloween treat bag. What began as a giveaway for the first 100 kids has grown to 200, thanks to the generous support of local businesses. Each bag is filled with goodies that make little eyes sparkle and set the tone for a night of sugar-fueled fun.
The venue hums with excitement as families make their way through bounce houses, conquer the giant 16-foot inflatable slides, and tackle the interactive obstacle courses. Laughter echoes through the building as glitter tattoos shimmer, fairy hair sparkles under the lights, and tiny faces are transformed into tigers, butterflies, and pumpkins with face painting and henna tattoos.
One of the highlights each year? The hayride! Thanks to local farm Golden Organic Farm in Edgecombe County, families get to hop aboard and enjoy a ride that brings a bit of countryside charm right into the heart of downtown Rocky Mount.

Inside, the fun continues with basketball, volleyball, cornhole, pickleball and Game Day. And in 2023, an exciting new feature rolled into town — a roller-skating rink, adding a retro twist to the night’s festivities that had parents lacing up alongside their kids.
And then there’s the star-studded lineup — not of celebrities, but beloved cartoon characters. Just imagine the smiles when Poppy from Trolls, Spongebob, Paw Patrol, Moana, and even the Minions show up for hugs, photos, and high-fives!
This event wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our local business community. Businesses like First Carolina Bank, Brightspeed, Panda Express, Sam’s Club, ServPro, PNC Bank, Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, and Wawa have played a major role — whether through financial contributions, candy donations, or showing up to engage with families.
These partners help keep Spooktacular completely free and fun-packed for everyone who attends, proving just how powerful community collaboration can be.
Local tourism organization Discover Edgecombe also brings a creative spark, offering free custom airbrushed hats that kids wear proudly as part of their costumes — or to simply stand out in the crowd.
Of course, Spooktacular Oktoberfest isn’t just for kids. While the little ones trick-or-treat and play, adults get to indulge too! Themed adult beverages let parents relax and sip something seasonal, while the whole family can grab a bite from the delicious concession stands and share a meal together.

It’s an afternoon where everyone gets to have fun — whether you’re racing up a slide, dancing with Moana, or enjoying a pumpkin-flavored drink while watching the joy on your child’s face.
By creating a safe, inclusive, and activity-filled event that brings families together, promotes physical play, and supports local businesses, the Rocky Mount Event Center is more than just a venue — it’s a cornerstone of community connection.
Spooktacular isn’t just about candy and costumes. It’s about creating shared memories, building community pride, and showcasing what happens when a city comes together with heart, purpose, and just the right amount of spooky fun.
